Anosmia / Loss Of Smell

Anosmia, or the loss of the sense of smell, might happen as a result of injury, infection, or genetics. It is more dangerous than people generally imagine – an anosmic person might not be able to smell gas leaks, for example, or bad food.

lost my sense of smell and am so frustrated - can not taste either. On arthiritis treatment, but get chronic hayfever. Are you on medication or treatment of some kind?

I am in the process of seeing an ent doctor for my loss of smell. After reading all these "posts" i do not think anything is going to bring this "sense" back. This is so frustrating, I get so tired of people saying, yum...doesnt that smell good??Or, smell these flowers they are wonderful!!!! I wish I could, but it looks like i should cancel any further appointments, and just be happy I am otherwise healthy.

I lost my sense of smell about 5 years ago due to an attack of meningitis. Apparently viral infections are one of the causes of Anosmia and actually "alters" the "thinking of the DNA. In my case the "thinking" of the DNA in my ofalctory nerves. I visited the Smell and Taste Clinic in Washington 2 years ago and the Doctor..Dr Henkel..specialises in this field. He prescribed "theophillan" ( a old asma treatment ) and said that with perseverense it would correct the "thinking" of the DNA. I tried it for about 6 months and then got tired of taking pills ( my own fault ). To date, there is plenty of Research being done re Anosmia and every couple of years new information is given to the Medical fraternity..the best that you can do is to ask your ENT to put you onto the Database in the event they start experimenting with "stem cell therapy" as the first area of the Human body that will be experimented with will be the ofalctory nerves in the nose as, apparently it is the only regenerating nerve in the Human body. Once on the Database we might be the lucky or...unlucky guinea pigs..but it's hope at least.

Hi Madeline, The "good" thing about going to the Clinic in DC for me was...that we established, after many tests which ranged from, blood, urine, saliva, diet, smelling tests [ various little bottles about 50 with scents ] etc...that I have no severed nerve damage. This means that I am able to smell but only at 5% acuteness. It means that there is a chance for me as opposed to someone with damaged nerves ( this means you have no chance of regaining your sense of smell ). Other than that...coming all the way from South Africa to DC...it wasn't really worth it for me as I still cannot smell and it cost me a "fortune". I am waiting for someone to use me as a guinea pig for Stem cell therapy and I am trying to get my name on as many "lists" as possible. Good luck with your journey.

I've lost my sense of smell over the last few years, but I've always had really bad allergies and immune system. I also read somewhere about theophyline possibly being able to help. Did it help yours at all while you took it?

I lost my smell about a year ago. Tried antibotics, no help. My brother told me to just use my basset hound for a "smelling nose dog".I work with paints and the likes. I can't tell when my respirator is bad. It happened to me after a cold. Not being able to smell "STINKS".

I lost my sense of smell too. The ENT Dr. I went to said I would get use to it. Everyday I want to cry or scream about it. My taste has decreased also. I found myself earing more just to make up the taste. I really don't like this either

Just like my case... I had a bad cold over 6 weeks ago, my sinuses cleared up and I could breathe easily - but no smell! I seem to be able to taste some things OK, but definitely smell is impaired. I hate not being able to smell when I'm cooking. It's going to take some adjustments, getting used to it all! I have to ask my kids to tell me if things smell off or whatever as a guide! So frustrating, but better than being deaf, or something similar.

I too had a bad cold about 9 months ago and lost my sense of smell. Wheh i had the cold I took way too much Flonase [nasal inhaler] and I tought that was what blew my ability to smell. After several months I started to smell something but it was and still is distorted. I have since experienced new smells and several old ones smell like something else..I think they call this anosmia, i.e. smell distortion. I still don't know if mine was from the cold virus or the inhaler. If you like we could compare notes. Based on my experience you may be able to smell again (to a degree) but it may be distorted. I just started taking zinc, ginko and some steroid treatment to see If I can stimulate my olfactory nerves.

I started smelling wires burning or burnt motor oil, then drinking a dr pepper, I started getting a strange taste. Then everything started smelling/tasting the same. I don't know why. no cold, allergy. I've gotten most of it back but anything that is hot, still has a weird smell like burnt cherios kinda and it makes sick to my stomach. My sense of taste has almost all come back. Going pass the feedlot isn't so bad anymore is the only plus, smelling cherios, lol I've had this since september. Can't afford to go to a dr.

I am curious about the ability to stimulate the olfactory nerve. i lost my sense of smell and taste [except for my taste buds] almost 20 years ago. i had a bad case of the flu, needed a second round of antibiotics to knock it out. my sense of smell took 6 months to completely be gone. i also quit smoking since i was so sick. it was when i started telling people i had quit smoking that people started asking me if things were tasting and smelling better. .
i had several visits with the ent specialists, cat scans and x-rays. nothing pathological at all. it was in a dental journal that the loss of smell/taste was linked to some type of virus.
lately, i have had the strange ability to smell a particular body spray that an employee i work with uses. what is strange, i can't stop smelling it. i can wake up in the middle of the night and smell it. i can actually smell it just by thinking about it.

I had the same experience! I had a bad virus about a month ago and used a few different nose sprays, including a zinc one, and since then I can't smell or taste anything! I am so frustrated and I hope it comes back :-[ I don't know anyone else who had this happen to them...

I lost mine after a cold too. I suspect the generic decongestant and a whole host of things. Here are some things to see if we have anything in common;I eat a lot of cereal, use honey in my coffee[what about those honey bees disapearing could this be related to that?], mosquitos love me, I have 2 dogs. I live near a nuclear plant. Man its a wonder I am still breathing!

I was born without a sense of smell. I don't miss what I have never experienced but most people don't believe me. I would like to smell Australia, the Georgia night air, or cookies! I would LOVE to smell cookies just once.
My dad has no smell, my sister has no smell. We can taste. I heard people who used to be able to smell and now cannot don't taste things. Is that true?
And is the most common question you get asked, "So, if i were to fart in your face you couldn't smell it?"
...I always want to reply, "Yes, i could. But only YOUR fart. Your fart is special."

Just to clear this up your sense of smell is suppose to account for about 70% of your sense of taste so if you've never been able to smell you will still be able to taste and not know what your missing but if you lose your sense of smell you will notice a significant decrease in your sense of taste. I can smell and taste just find but my mum's sense of smell packed it in completely several years ago due too continues sinus infections.

I also can't remember ever smelling something. One of the (many) things that made me begin to clue in that maybe something was really amiss was when, on a kid's show, the host was asking kids to taste foods with blindfolds on and to guess the food, and then to pinch their noses shut and try the same. Of course the kids in the show could smell, because once their noses were pinched they didn't know what they were eating and you could tell they were really surprised at the difference it made. I then tried that at home, and I couldn't notice any difference between my taste with my nose pinched closed or not.

Ive never been able to smell, well at least i think so, I can taste but. I recognised this when i was about 16 iam now 20. I have only been once to see the doctor about it and they said i have to go to a specialist! iam curious have any of u been to doctors about this if so what kind of tests do they do? The only time i can think i lost my smell is when i stuck a gumnut up my nose at the age of 4 unless i was born with it.
