Anosmia / Loss Of Smell

Anosmia, or the loss of the sense of smell, might happen as a result of injury, infection, or genetics. It is more dangerous than people generally imagine – an anosmic person might not be able to smell gas leaks, for example, or bad food.

Hello All. I to suffer from the same sypmtoms. 8 years and 1 surgery later...i still can't smell. Sure it comes and goes, but i can say i have had my sense of smell for only about 5% of the last 8 years.

It has not been mentioned on here yet but try researching Coliac Disease. When i have fasted in the past i noticed that my smell would come back. I'm now in the middle (trial and error) of pinpointing my food allergies. I think i'm allergic to Gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats) Its worth a shot.

Good luck!

Lost mine 18 years ago. Have tried the following:
Beconase, fluxonase, otrivine, theophylline, diet change after allergy testing, acuptucture, surgery for a deviated septum, Frontal endoscopic sinus surgery, Nasonax, Nasofan, Daily irrigation of the sinuses,Sinus buster spray, Kenalog shot and lastly Prednsione.

These are the things i remember trying. There may be a few more that i can't remember! The only thing that has worked has been Prednisone and as stated elsewhere it is too dangerous to be on full time. Anyway I have not given up hope just yet but find it very frustrating. Am currenlty awaiting sinuswars products and a referral for Image guided Fess. Dont want to give up hope yet but am fast running out of options. If i get a result i'll post again. Good Luck all.

I've had anosmia for about 30 years now. I went to an ENT, and he got me to try prednison for a week. Within that week I was able to "fully taste" a piece of crunch lettuce and a cheese burrito, for like a split second. I've stayed off anosmia boards for a few years, but am joining the Yahoo one again, just in case there's any new developments.

I lost my sense of smell & taste since 2006, methylprednisolone tablet is a help but only for a month. I can't take it monthly because steroids are not that good for our health. I have tried functional endosopic sinus surgery but still no effect. i got diarhhea 2-3x because I am not aware that the food I have eaten were already spoiled. I want to try sinuswars but I want to hear testimonies from people who already tried it.

I lost my sense of smell 3 years ago. I had horrible migraines no medication was helping. I had an mri done, there they saw a tumor. It was either remove it and lose your sense of smell forever or drain spinal fluid out of my nose and eventually die. I had a hard time dealing with it at first because I'm in culinary school. But I'm dealing with it day to day. It's really hard and it can make you depressed i've been there. But at least I still have all my other senses. Yes I can still taste which today my Dr's dont understand why. And i've tried to find Dr's all over the eastcoast that are working in a cure, but nothing yet. One college wanted me to be there guinnie pig, and run test allday, but I couldn't do it. I know it's hard, it really is, I can never live alone. But I will post any information I can or if I hear anything.
