Anosmia / Loss Of Smell

Anosmia, or the loss of the sense of smell, might happen as a result of injury, infection, or genetics. It is more dangerous than people generally imagine – an anosmic person might not be able to smell gas leaks, for example, or bad food.

I read that loss of olfaction may lead to the loss of libido.. Do you have this problem? Or is it just my case?

I have completely lost my sense of smell for weeks. While I miss the smell of my husband's aftershave, it hasn't affected my libido. Maybe something else is going on. Good luck!

Im a healthy 40 year old female who is recovering from what I would describe as a prolonged cold [approx. 3 weeks]. Approximately 10 days ago, I noticed I was unable to smell, but didn't think much of it because I was still really congested. I used vicks vapor rub and otrivin for relief. I used the otrivin once per day for about 4 days. I was able to breathe better but still could not smell a thing. Went to doctor and was prescribed steroid nose spray (avamys) which I've been taking for almost a week. Brief whiffs of scent but that's it. No history of sinusitis/allergies. Very concerned as there appears to be no justification for the loss. Nose still runny and I continue to have a cough, but I am generally able to breathe and was hoping to be able to smell more by now.

Hi, I am really interested in knowing if your smell came back. I also took mucinex in January for a bad cold and lost my sense of smell and taste. I am able to taste foods but to this date my smell is still poor. I am able to smell some things if i put it up close to my nose but I find that I cannot smell unpleasant odors at all. Please let me know if you have found a resolution.

I suffered a knock to the back of the head in 2005 and have had no sense of smell ever since. I can sometimes smell cherry, baby wipes, fish, petrol, and smoke. "markpeacock@hotmail.com". Thanks.

I lost my smell about eight years back after the use of an over the counter cold remedy, it came on [or off] so gradual I am still not sure as to the time my ability to smell disappeared. I am now having marital issues due to this condition, I have no sex drive any more and My poor wife is the one who is suffering the most. I am searching for support through the web to see how others have dealt with this condition .

I had a cold - not too severe and did not use any anti-biotics or cold medicines. But i used a homeopathy preparation 'alleraid' quite often first two days and then stopped after i discovered that i could not smell anything. It has happened before with anti-histamines but comes back. This time after day 5 still no smell and it's scary...I am Indian and the loss of spice in my life, literally, is quite unbearable. Would like Ms Salley to post any findings of her study to the group. thanks! Maha

I had my tonsils removed in nov 2011 I am 44yrs old and I have lost taste and smell. Certain things I can smell and taste but Its not the same as It used to be, Also my tong feels weird like I have an elastic band round it. So I went to Docs and they sent me for a CT scan. But I was recovering from a cold that week when I had my Scan. The doctor told me over the phone it looks like I have sinusitus..But I have never suffered with my sinuses. I have lost a stone in weight because I only eat when I am hungry please please if you have any solutions I would like to hear them. I have tried zinc and it did not help.

I lost my sense of smell and taste about 7 years ago. It was very gradual and I realised something was wrong when i opened up a bottle of perfume. Eventually I did see Dr. Richard Doty at the University of Pennsylvania who confirmed that I had lost both senses. I had had an MRI and CAT Scan also. Dr. Doty came to the conclusion that my many sinus infections treated with anti-biotics, a bad case of the flue and pneumonia the following year - the latter treated with more anti-biotics were the probable causes. I have recetnly begun to read more on the condition and have seen the support groups. I agree, it is very debilitating. I lost interest in so many things and although people seem supportive, they really have no idea of the effect it has on one's life. I hate to complain about it as things could be much worse, but the longer it goes on, the worse I feel about it.
