Depression

Depression in psychology and psychiatry refers to long term and persistent feeling of sadness, guilt, hopelessness and thoughts of death. A depressed person cannot just 'snap out of it' - he needs support from his family and friends, and sometimes counseling and medication can help too.

This online support group for depression will help you realize you are not alone - join up, help others going through the same road as you are, find help for yourself, and meet professionals who know about the condition too.

"It is a time when one's spirit is subdued and sad, one knows now why; when the past seems a storm-swept desolation, life a vanity and a burden, and the future but a way to death."

-Mark Twain

Depressed person needs a lot of love and care to get back to normal.

Don't stop taking your antidepressant medication too soon or without the doctor's knowledge. Inform the doctor about any side-effects.

Take good care of the person during treatment for clinical depression. Be sure to get plenty of rest, sunshine, exercise and nutritious, well-balanced meals. Reducing the stress in life will also help.

Think happy thoughts. A recent study found that people who learn to have a more optimistic attitude are less likely to become depressed--even if they were naturally pessimists. Changing the way you perceive life can have a dramatic affect on your mental health.

Learn to laugh. Laughing actually triggers the same endorphins that are exercise gives you.

The fact is that depression is not a diseases, it is a state of mind which needs to bend towards a right and positive direction. And so, depression treatment is only possible through support.

It isn’t a question of “beating” depression it is a question on how best to deal with it. Some of the previous posts give some great suggestions. We all do “self talk” the things we say inside our head, watch out for saying negative things about yourself. Try to change this behavior by purposefully saying nice things about yourself. It was very hard for me to do that at first. It took quite a while before it didn’t sound totally phony (still does a bit) but it really does help. Also focus on the good things about yourself, if you can’t think about any good about you at this current moment, think about all the good things you have done in the past, and sometimes even the smallest kindness can have a huge impact on others. Try to find others to lean on, it is truly shocking how many people are dealing with issues of their own, and even if their issues are nothing like yours, most of them would welcome your support, and be equally happy to help you with yours. The hardest part is taking the risk involved in reaching out for help.
