Swollen Gums

Swollen gums, or gingivitis, can be caused by malnutrition, allergic reactions to toothpastes or mouthwashes, badly-fitting dentures, or by infections. If they are not treated, you might end up with periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is associated with heart disease and some kinds of cancer.

1. Can a swollen gum cause any discomfort?

It is usually associated with a mild constant gnawing pain, or may cause no pain at all. The swelling may hamper the normal brushing, resulting in increased accumulation of bacteria and hence causing more inflammation and destruction of gum tissue.
