Phobias are unreasonable, intense fears of things that are not dangerous in themselves. In psychiatry it is classed as a kind of anxiety disorder. Severe phobias can interfere with everyday life, but there are a number of treatments (like desensitization and cognitive behavioral therapy) that are effective for phobias.
