Mitral valve regurgitation happens when the mitral valve, which controls blood flow between the left atrium and the left ventricle within the heart, does not close properly. This allows blood to flow back within the heart, and the heart is not able to pump blood to the body as efficiently. The defect is corrected with an open heart surgery to replace the damaged mitral valve with a tissue or mechanical valve.Join our online group on mitral valve regurgitation and mitral valve replacement to ask your questions to experts, share your experiences, and learn more.
