Hepatitis A

Out of the three known forms of Hepatitis, Hepatitis A is the most benign and leaves no long term side effects. This is a disorder in which viruses produce inflammation of liver cells, resulting in their injury or destruction.

Medindia’s support group on Hepatitis A hosts a wealth of information on the subject; informing patients of the disease and helping them network with doctors.

1. If some one in the family is infected with Hepatitis A, will it infect the other members?

Hepatitis A is highly contagious and it can spread through personal contact. Isolating the infected person and maintaining cleanliness will help to prevent the disease from further spread.

2. How can I reduce my risks of spreading hepatitis?

The most effective means of preventing viral hepatitis is to avoid contact with the blood, saliva, semen, or vaginal secretions of infected individuals.

Avoid sharing items that could infect others, such as razors or toothbrushes.

3. How long does immunity last after hepatitis A vaccination?

Although data on long-term protection are limited, estimates based on modeling techniques suggest that protection will last for at least 20 years.

4. What is Liver function test?

A liver function test (LFT) is a blood test that helps a doctor determine whether the liver is functioning properly. The test measures the levels of liver enzymes in the blood as a way of helping diagnose liver problems. When the liver is injured, liver enzymes which normally are contained within the cells of the liver are spilled into the bloodstream. A liver function test may detect elevated levels of these liver enzymes if a patient has liver damage.
