This Boston study rightly emphasizes the importance of treatment of substance abuse prior to liver transplant. Among 1500 recipients of living donor liver transplants in our series, the 330 transplanted for end-stage alcoholic liver disease have benefitted immensely from our structured program for treatment of alcoholism prior to transplant. This has resulted in low rates of recurrence of alcohol abuse, excellent survival and quality of life after transplant.
