Kaushik Bharati, PhDIn the field of anticancer therapy, a number of strategies for improving the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer agents have emerged over the past several decades. These strategies essentially involve strategies for targeted anticancer drug delivery. Several new classes of targeted anticancer therapies have recently been introduced for routine clinical use. While conventional chemotherapy targets all dividing cells, these molecules target specifically the cancer cells. These i... Read More

Thanks Partha for your kinds words of appreciation. Actually, particularly in the Indian context and other LMICs, the problem lies in the affordability of these drugs. For example, monoclonal antibodies (mAb) like trastazumab (Herceptin) for breast cancer, costs anywhere between ~ Rs. 19,000/- to ~ Rs. 60,000/- per vial, depending on the amount of the mAb-drug conjugate present. Therefore, the prohibitively high price of the drugs is the major hindrance to affordability. This needs to be solved in order to make the drugs more accessible to the general public.

Thx for this excellent write up, you have narrated a very complex scientific situation in a simple manner so that everyone can understand the context and how the future is shaping up to fight against cancer. Improved targeted therapy will enhance the efficacy of the drug while side effects will be history for chemotherapy. I recall patients are scared of chemo because of associated hair loss factor. I have recently got an opportunity to explore the IBM Watson's cognitive capability to help physician to identify the most appropriate drug regime for a patient based on evidence, I believe combination of Watson's cognitive capability and targeted therapy will be lethal for cancer.
