Epigenetics is a new (well to some of us!) buzzword in the field of egg donation for conception. Essentially Epigenetics refers to factors outside the gene, such as a cell's exposure to hormones or genetic variations that can modify a gene. Such factors can change what is ultimately expressed; they can change a phenotype i.e.: they can alter what an organism looks like as a consequence of the interaction of its gene AND the environment. In terms of conception via egg donation that environment beg... Interesting piece of info. Epigenetics has been the buzzword for the past few years among the molecular biology research group and literally means - “changes in addition to changes in genetic sequence.” Imagine where it is not the gene sequence, but something else that is responsible for some inherited condition. Today many diseases like Lupus have come into focus where epigenetics role is being established. Other diseases include cancers, cognitive dysfunction, respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, autoimmune, and neurobehavioral illnesses. Trigger for such changes include many agents such as - heavy metals, pesticides, diesel exhaust, smoke, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hormones, radioactivity, viruses, bacteria, and some basic nutrients. In some experiments it was found that epigentics can carry to other generations, upto four in case of decereased sperm count due to relatively high levels of the insecticide methoxychlor and the fungicide vinclozolin resulting in male infertility in the male pups. Digging for more information.
