Primary Amenorrhea

Primary amenorrhea is a condition when a girl has not started menstruating by the time she is 16, even though other signs of puberty, like breast development and the appearance of pubic hair, are normal. Besides hormonal abnormalities and other illnesses, low body weight or obesity, stress and rigorous exercise can cause primary amenorrhea.

Ladies, Im new to this

I am finally starting to panic.
I am 23 years old. I have had one natural period in my life. In April of 2006, at almost 18 yrs of age, I finally experienced my first period. To this day, this is the only period I have had naturally. On two extended durations, I have taken bcp and have experienced a somewhat "normal" period." Due to weight gain, I ultimately wanted to stop taking birth control as of 11 months ago. I have yet to have the slightest sign of a period since. Unless I was taking birth control, I NEVER had a period other then April 2006.
I am ultimately terrified I cannot have children. Even more so, since that April 2006, my mother believes I am normal and is completely unaware of what is going on with my body. I am reluctant to discuss it with her, and am equally hesitant to gain the strength to be medically examined for it.
My silence of my condition has haunted me now for 5 years, and I have not yet others that I can relate to.
I am begging for wonderful help and advice. Please!!

Hi there,
I completely sympathise and feel your pain; I too am 23, and have had a very similar experience! I first went to my GP aged 18 and was put on Microgynon, on that I had "normal" withdrawal periods. They also did hormone tests and uterus scan and found everything was normal so told me to carry on with the pill until I wanted to conceive. Since then, I have been on and off the pill and have only ever had 2 natural periods; 1 in 2008 and 1 a year ago. I have now been off the pill since Christmas and have not had a period since. I went back to a GP and specialist this year because I really want to sort the problem, but just heard today again he advises doing nothing as tests are normal apart from low BMI (about 18.7). This is devastating for me as I find it very difficult to be sexually aroused and when I have tried to have sex it has been extremely painful-I am sure there must be hormonal imbalance and am desperate to sort it out; I also have very small breasts and self-confidence in my body is terrible. I don't feel able to discuss this with my mother or friends either! Sorry to be so negative but hope it helps to know someone else feeling the same. Can I ask whether you have ever had any problems with sexual arousal too?
