I know it's hard for people to understand how someone could do something this awful, and so it's a natural reaction to think the person "must be crazy". Yet perfectly sane people to horrible, cruel things to others every day.

I'm pretty sure that being mentally fit to stand trial (i.e., to be legally 'sane') means that the person is able to tell right from wrong. Li's plea of "Please kill me" show quite clearly that he is aware that he's done a despicable thing. He knows damn well it was "wrong". If Li doesn't go to court for his crime, I will be thoroughly disgusted with our legal system.

I also want to add that just because a person has a mental illness, doesn't necessarily mean they are not "sane" or cannot tell right from wrong. The mere presence of a mental illness is not a "get out of jail free card". It would be very foolish of our legal system approach Li with the attitude that just becasue he has a mental illness, he is not responsible for his actions. That is just not so. Unless it can be shown that he had no idea what he was doing or that it was wrong, Li can and MUST be put on trial, out of respect for his family and out of duty to our legal system, Canadian citizens, and the rest of the world, who all want and need to see justice done here.
