BPD/Borderline Personality Disorder is not in the DMS-IV TR and is considered by many professionals to be a 'waste-paper basket diagnosis' - simply meaning they have no other diagnosis, so they lump them into this ill-conceived category with a very unhelpful name. Even if it was a real mental disorder which it is not, would it be helpful to tell someone who has "..feelings of anger, emptiness, shame and guilt and become emotionally volatile." that their personality is defective. There is another slightly kinder name for this called Complex PTSD - also not in the DSM-IV TR but I guess if you can diagnose enough patients, therapists can make more money. This is akin to calling people with Parkinson's disease "movement freaks". Time to stop living in the dark ages!
