The statement,"One way of achieving this is by subtly telling them they are ugly, something many cosmetics adverts achieve implicitly and very effectively by showing images of unusually beautiful women", is redundant. Most Indian girls sans make up are ugly, and that is why the horny men of India get their kicks by watching scantily and provocatively cald movie stars. Just read some ads by Indian women in Shaadi.com. They are faking their looks by posing as Bollywood actresses!

You say 'most indian girls sans make up are ugly'. How about men? How good looking are you, you think!

I agree. MOST Indian men are disheveled, clownish and as ugly as the women, if not uglier. Does it make you feel any better S. Chy?

@Petronious, I find both your comments uncommonly ridiculous in perspective of this article. I guess its useless to try to inform you that your perception of "ugly" or "beautiful" are also tailored and not the basic truth. The typification harms all men, women and even children. Perhaps children are most affected since such negative emotions harm their psyche more easily. Any tailoring of perception should ideally be only to make people positive and happy. That is the whole point of this article.

I hate to become controversial while putting forth my views and comments. The whole agrument got staretd because the forbidden U word is in the article itself ! [the statement by the Lead researcher Vanessa Apaolaza].

BTW, I would like to draw the readers' attention to an article, ugly Indian man by Mukul Kesavan in THE TELEGRAPGH August 9, 2007 where he avers, " I know now that Indian men aren’t born ugly: they achieve ugliness through practice. It is their habits and routines that make them ugly" Thus cosmetics are a MUST to to cover up defects or blemishes
