What triggers the reactivation of herpes virus?

Most common outbreak triggers are:

- Exposure to extreme sunlight

- Stress

- Illnesses, including a cold or the flu

- Menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth

- Local trauma or injury to the skin around the lips

Scientists are still trying to understand exactly how the factors that can trigger cold sores interact with the immune system and the virus to prompt the outbreak.
