Normally you cannot hear or feel your heart sounds, unless of course you place your hands over your chest. When you feel or hear your heart sounds it is called palpitation. It can occur normally during intense fear or during episodes of anxiety in which case you need not worry. Only if you persistently hear them or if they are associated with other symptoms like chest pain or breathlessness then it needs to be investigated. Abnormal palpitations can be caused due to heart disease or hyperthyroidism.
If palpitations are severe and are bothering you than you will need to consult a general physician who will examine you and determine what tests need to be done.
