Due to the risk of gallstone related complications like acute cholecystitis, gallstone pancreatitis, choledocholithiasis etc elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy is indicated after the first episode of typical biliary symptoms. In asymptomatic gallstone disease cholecystectomy is indicated in sicle cell disease, people working in remote areas where no immediate access to health care facilities are awailable, patients undergoing abdominal surgery for other reasons and in people on chronic immunosuppression.
