Insulin is usually used in patients who have type 1 diabetes or diabetes from a young age. People who suffer from type 2 diabetes (usually detected when the person is an adult)are first controlled with diet, exercise or pills. They may be prescribed insulin only under certain conditions such as if they do not respond to tablets, if they are undergoing surgery, have severe infection or are suffering from complications of diabetes like ketoacidosis.
