You have not mentioned if the polycystic kidneys are present from childhood or if they have developed in an adult. The main precautions that need to be taken are:
1. Careful control of blood pressure. For this the Bp needs to measured regularly.
2.If the person develops fever or burning micturition or blood in the urine it needs to be treated promptly.
3. Plenty of oral of fluid and bed rest when blood in the urine is first noted
4. A healthy lifestyle with regard to smoking, exercise, and weight control.
5. Reducing salt intake helps control blood pressure in patients who have high blood pressure. For this try not to add extra salt on the table and avoid all pickles and pappads.
6. Low fat and moderate caloric intake are recommended to avoid becoming overweight. Avoid all deep fried and oily food.
