The main precaution that a person suffering from infective endocarditis needs to take is when he is undergoing procedures like dental extraction or surgery. For such procedures he will be given prophylactic antibiotics to prevent the infection from seeding elsewhere. As long is there is a defective valve or an artificial valve the chances of infective endocarditis are very high as this forms a nidus for infection
