Onset of Lactation occurs soon after delivery, but a mother is often too tired after the trauma of delivery to be able to breastfeed her baby properly at regular intervals. The baby also needs to be fed in a proper manner, which is not known to all mothers or hospital staff.
Actually, maintainance of lactation depends upon what is called, the "let-down reflex" in the mother, which gushes milk into the breast when her baby begins to suckle.
A poor let-down reflex can occur when there is pain, fatigue, irritability etc.
However, herbs like the Indian weed 'dudhi' can keep this reflex (and the lactation) going. But there are other herbs as well, which can be used.
Breast feeding must be encouraged and promoted, in the interest of child health, and the immediate period after birth of the child is critical in this regard.
