Doctors block traffic Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 17

More than 250 doctors from the city and adjoining areas staged a dharna in front of the mini Secretariat and blocked traffic for almost an hour on the Ferozepur road as a mark of protest against the absence of the DC, ADC and SDMs in their respective offices. The doctors had gone to the DC’s office to hand over a memorandum seeking the withdrawal of a criminal case against Dr Gurdip Singh under Section 304 of the IPC after the death of a local BJP leader following bariatric surgery at Sidhu Hospital, Doraha, on July 11. The road was blocked from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm and the dharna was lifted after the intervention of the SDM (West) who accepted the memorandum on behalf of the DC. The doctors from all leading hospitals, including the DMCH, CMCH and SPS Apollo Hospital, besides hospitals at Machchiwara, Jagraon, Mullanpur, Raikot Sahnewal, Samrala and Khanna had gathered in Ludhiana to register a peaceful protest in this regard. The protest was part of a token strike observed by IMA members from all over the state from 9 am to 12 noon on the call given by the state body of the IMA. Leading physicians and surgeons from the city carried banners demanding strict implementation of the Punjab Medical Professionals Protection Act against Violence, 2008, and action against police officials who were booking doctors under Section 304 without the report of the medical board, which was a violation of the Supreme Court ruling. Dr Manoj Sobti, IMA district president, said: “It is unfair on the part of the DC not to be present in his office to receive the memorandum of doctors despite having been informed beforehand.”
