First of all, I accidentally cured my gout with baking soda in water. I then research the medical literature for the answer to the same question you have and found nothing. Since there is no such info in medical literature, of course doctors won't be prescribing it. As pointed out by some people who wrote me, a reason it wasn't studied or publicized is because baking soda is so inexpensive that there is no profit to study and promote it as gout medicine. But it really seems to work. Among the 194 users who answered my survey at http://ICuredMyGout.org said: it is "extremely useful (58%), "very useful" (14%), "useful" (15%) to treat and prevent gout with baking soda in water. Appreciate any suggestion on how to disseminate the info to gout sufferers especially the ones who can't afford the expensive prescription drugs.

Only cases I read about over 2~3 years are: One user vomitted, but he was not sure if baking soda did it. The second case was a person had diarrhea, because he mixed baking soda too thick. You can try small amount first, e.g.. 1/4 tsp. in 4~8 oz. water. Then use regular amount 1/2 tsp. in 4~8 oz. of water if there is no problem. Use it when the stomach is not too full. Check with your doctor to see if it's OK for you to take it first. Good luck.
