Carisoprodol for back pain

The use of for low back pain continues to be a source of controversy among doctors, mainly because of their side effects (sedation, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting). Potential for abuse and dependency has also great drawback.

Carisoprodol is commonly used for back pain. It is effective in relieving stiffness, increasing movement, and leading to general improvement.
Carisoprodol has moderate antispasmodic effects and is mildly sedative. Carisoprodol blocks interneuronal activity in the descending reticular formation and spinal cord. It is metabolized to meprobamate.

Meprobamate is a CNS depressant, indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for short-term treatment of anxiety. Excessive use can result in psychological and physical dependence.
