"...a woman fears becoming the victim of a crime so she turns to true crime books in a possible effort to learn strategies and techniques to prevent becoming murdered"

I have to believe the reasoning is darker. By this logic, the reason most people are attracted to crime drama, truth or fiction, is to learn how to prevent it? I think we give ourselves too much credit here. Not everything is dictated by logic, otherwise the death penalty would be an effective deterrent.
