Sleep Eating Disorders

People with sleep eating disorders eat and sometimes prepare food in their sleep. Like sleep walkers, they have no or very little memory of this when they are awake. Many people with sleep eating disorders diet during the day, and they tend to be depressed, worried, exhausted or angry.

1. Who treats Nocturnal Sleep-Related Eating Disorder (NS-RED)?

A sleep specialist treats Nocturnal Sleep-Related Eating Disorder (NS-RED).

2. How can people eat and not remember doing so?

It appears that parts of their brains are truly asleep, and, at the same time, other parts are awake. The parts that regulate waking or consciousness are asleep, so the next day there are no memories of eating the night before.

3. If a person is asleep how can he differentiate between edible and non-edible food?

Habitually the person may go to a place where edible food is stored. Food consumed by sleep eaters tends to be either high sugar or high fat. Consumption of odd combinations of foods have also been reported. Oddly, one person was discovered cutting a bar of soap into slices and then eating it as if it were a slice of cheese!
