Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe and disabling mental disorder. A person with schizophrenia might see or hear things that others don’t, have bizarre beliefs, and suspect that others are plotting against him because he has a special mission in the world. Schizophrenia can be treated with medicines.

1. Can schizophrenia be prevented?

There is no known way to prevent schizophrenia.

2. Can the medicines be stopped once the symptoms recede?

No. Continue taking the medicine as long as the doctor advises. Discontinuation can produce a relapse.

3. Can a schizophrenic be able to work?

Yes, given the adequate encouragement and occupational therapy the patient can employ himself in a suitable occupation.

4. Can Children Have Schizophrenia?

Children over the age of five can develop schizophrenia, but it is very rare before adolescence.
