Nigeria is not the first nor the last country where a ban will be placed on public smoking, therefore i disagree that the companies will run out of business, the emphasis should be on a healthy and productive work force and community. While i commend the initiative of the government in conjunction with the health department and other concerned asociations, i would like the government to set up counselling programmes for smokers that want to cease smoking. Also, ensure that companies have anti-smoking policy to prevent passive smoking at work places, hospitality services such as bars and restaurants should have seperate arears for smoking, smoke free, or smoking at restricted hours. In addition, the media campaign for smoke free community should get to the rural arears and low income arears where a higher percentage of the population are smokers. I know politics abound in all issues, but please this is about having healthy population. What is the sense in having a population of passive smokers that will die from preventable diseases? We don't have to wait till majority of the population are passive smokers, let us act now, we have enough evidence. I just wonder what the health policy of the tobacco producing companies is.
