Not surprising as most baby boomers acquired Hepatitis C in the 70s and 80s before it was discovered/recognized in 1989. Since the virus takes 20-35 years to damage the liver and cause cancer, there will be a further rise in liver transplants for Hepatitis C liver disease for another 10 years.
However, the Hepatitis C cloud has a silver lining too! Protease inhibitors are new drugs that inhibit a key step in viral replication and may prove to be the silver bullets that will cure the disease completely in the next 5 years. Indians have much to cheer about as they usually get a milder form of the disease [Genotype 3] which responds well to treatment.
