There is a small problem with the hypothesis that IBS is a brain-gut disorder. The problem is historically IBS is a fairly new disease. The first references to IBS started to show up in the 1950’s, before then it was very rare and considered a mental problem. If it was a brain-gut disorder as the study says then IBS would have been a well know disease throughout medical history and it is not.
If you only look at the 14 million people who suffer from arthritis who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs] like aspirin. More then 60% of those people will develop gastrointestinal problems such as IBS. That is a direct relationship between the drugs being taken and the disease IBS. Anti-biotic use is also know to have a direct relationship to the disease. Dr. Paul Blake
