1. Who should I see if I have Constipation?

First advice is to drink atleast 8-10 glasses of water per day. Then to see a General Physician.

2. What can I do to avoid constipation?

A change in your food habits and exercise will relieve your constipation. Fiber content of the food helps to soften the stool. Including fibre containing food like vegetables and fruits. Also, drink plenty of water and take exercise moderately. If you are taking any medications, consult your doctor as it may also a cause of your constipation.

3. How does fibre help in constipation?

Much of the food we eat is digested in the stomach and small intestine, but fibre is not digested and passes to the large intestine where it acts like blotting paper, drawing water into the stool and increases the number of bacteria in the colon. Both these effects make the stool larger, softer and easier to pass.

4. How can I increase the fibre in my diet?

The easiest way to improve your diet is to eat brown, whole meal bread and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. For further information contact MedIndia dietician who can advise you on fibre rich diet.
