How to treat cold sores

There is no cure for cold sores. But medications may slightly reduce the duration of outbreak and sometimes prevent a future outbreak.

Cold sores are best treated as early as possible. Starting treatment when prodromal symptoms (burning, tingling, or redness) begin gives the best chance of keeping the cold sores from developing.

Antiviral medications can:

- Decrease the time it takes for cold sores to heal

- Reduce symptoms - especially pain

- Prevent lesions from occurring if taken soon enough

- Reduce the number of lesions developed if taken soon enough

- Reduce viral shedding

Topical acyclovir can reduce pain, itching, and healing time. Oral

Valacyclovir if started at the first sign of symptoms (2 gm twice a day for one day) may shorten the herpes infection by a little over one day.

Vitamin C, Lysine, and lemon balm may provide some relief during a cold sore outbreak. Zinc oinment may be also very effective remedy.

according to the online doctor on STDchats, com:
Cold sores contain the HSV-1 virus. People with cold sores should wash their hands often, especially after touching the face. Cups and eating utensils should not be shared with another person. A home remedy like cold compresses may relieve pain temporarily. Lysine, an amino acid, was once thought to be a potential treatment, but the evidence for this is unconvincing. Other home remedies, including vitamin supplements and changes in diet, have not been well studied.
