There are things those that are not vaccinated against HPV can do to lower their risk of oral cancer. Currently HPV is felt to be responsible for roughly 25 percent of oral cancers in the US. A study published in the journal "Cancer", showed that a diet high in foods containing lutein, vitamin A, vitamin C and papaya accelerated clearance of the HPV virus, leaving less time for it to cause the inflammation that can lead to cancer. Though recommendations for screening are not available, it would seem wise that individuals see their dentists regularly. Many dentists now routinely screen for oral cancer.
